Corporate Flag Design
Colours and Layout
For
maximum recognition at a distance, externally the best design are the simplest,
making use of bold contrasting colours to attract the human eye Use of company
logos, incorporated in a flag design, offer a most cost effective way of
increasing general public awareness of a particular organisation. Lettering detracts
from the visual impact and should be avoided or at best kept to a minimum.
Varying
in shades of colour should be avoided as these are unrecognisable when a flag
is flying.
Choosing
the size of flag
1.
The size of
flag is measured by its length or fly, and this is given in yards (or metric).
The shorter breadth is known as its hoist. Approximate size is determined by
flying height and the simple rule generally followed is 1 yard of flag for
every 10 feet of flagstaff (proportions of 3:10). Therefore, a 40 foot flagstaff would require a 4 yard flag, a 10 metre flagstaff a 3
metre flag.
2.
Different
considerations apply when the flag is flying from a flagstaff on top of a
building. Here choice should be based on overall proportions to ensure that the
size will appear correctly when flying. 1 square foot of flag per linear
foot of height (1 square metre per linear metre of height) is usually
appropriate in this situation.
Choosing
the proportions of flag
3.
National
flags vary in their proportions with the most common being 3:2 and 2:1. In the
UK 2:1 is the proportion generally adopted. This will vary according to the
shape and size of a logo.
4.
